What is the difference between ceramic and porcelain tiles?
Wall and floor ceramic tiles are made from clay, pressed, glazed, and then fired in a kiln at high temperatures. Porcelain tiles are made from finer clays with a higher silica content and additional ingredients to give superior density and strength. They are pressed under greater pressure and fired at higher temperatures, making them stronger, less porous, and more resilient than traditional wall tiles or glazed ceramic floor tiles. We only stock porcelain tiles because they are more robust, long-lasting, and stronger than ceramic tiles. Read more about the 10 different types of tiles as well as the benefits of tiles for residential and commericial use.
Do I need to seal porcelain tiles?
No, porcelain tiles are hard, dense, and have a smooth surface, making them non-absorbent to sealers.
What is shade/batch variation?
Tiles display a ‘batch number,’ which indicates the specific production run. Tiles may vary in shade, color, size, and appearance from batch to batch. To ensure you are happy with the end result, we recommend checking that all boxes delivered display the same shade/tone/reference numbers. Laying constitutes acceptance of the product, so it is important to identify any issues prior to laying.
How much wastage do I need?
To account for waste, we advise ordering an extra 10-15% of your purchase. Finding the same tile or batch years after the job is finished can be challenging. This extra amount makes future replacements much simpler. Some areas will need more cuts, resulting in more waste. Always check the quantities with your tiler or builder before placing your order.
What tiles should I pick for wet areas? Are your tiles waterproof?
Most tiles are suitable for wet areas, but when choosing tiles for spaces like bathrooms or kitchens, consider slip resistance and water absorption ratings. While it is not necessary to waterproof grout, epoxy grout can prevent discoloration and staining.
